Each year, in the spring and fall, horses put on their new coat In the fall, they lose only a few hairs but develop an abundant undercoat (the fluff) In the spring, they replace almost all of their coat The moult is triggered by the change in daylight hours and not by the outside temperature
To form a new coat the horse's body needs a lot of energy, amino acids, minerals, vitamins and trace elements (especially zinc and selenium). If these elements are lacking, the moulting process continues but the horse's immune system is weakened It then lacks energy, is tired and even loses weight
