The pelham bit is often used to better control strong horses with blood. It has more of a lowering effect when the reins are attached to the lower ring, and a slightly lifting effect when they are attached to the larger ring.
The longer the bit shanks, the greater the leverage.
The pelham can be used with 2 or 4 reins. It can also be used without a curb chain to soften its action on the mouth.
You can also use a leather strap to replace the metal curb chain.
