The filter is simply attached to the container using suction cups. The special feature of the pikup filter is this: You can simply remove the filter with its filter foam from the top. The pump body remains in the tank. This is very practical when cleaning or changing the filter cartridge. The pump draws in the water from below and returns it through the filter foam. The cleaned water is returned to the tank via the rotating discharge nozzle.
