Blunt Braid Needles Smart Grooming

Handy, blunt braid needles with a large eye for quick and secure braiding without injections. Ideal for competition looks and sleek, polished buns. The set includes three lengths, allowing you to work easily with both fine and full manes.

Tip: Especially effective when combined with coated flat braiding thread to thread in one smooth motion.

Benefits of Braid Needles Smart Grooming

  • Fine tread: safe for you and your horse, no pokes
  • Large eye: threading the thread is super fast, even with coated thread
  • Three lengths in one set: suitable for different mane thicknesses
  • Nicely stored: comes in a clear tube

Use a needle and (coated) thread to create tight, small braids that stay put and look neat all day, perfect for competitions and photo shoots. Below is a quick tutorial with pro tips.

Requirements:

  • Coated flat braiding thread (0.8 mm, for example, XL spool of 270 m)
  • Blunt braid needles with a large eye
  • Mane comb (preferably with a rat tail), clips
  • Braiding gel (braiding wax) and a water spray
  • (Optional) elastic bands for temporary securing
  • Scissors + “quick release” (safe loosening)
  • Toupet: “Straight braiding clip”

Step by Step Plan (Quick and Precise)

Preparation

  1. Clean and dry: preferably the day before. Hair too slick? Use braiding wax for better hold.
    2. Length: Ideally ±10-12 cm and evenly distributed.
    3. Choose the right side: generally for dressage. Carefully comb everything in that direction.
    4. Thread ready: Cut about 40 to 50 cm from each braid (or work from the spool). A coated flat thread provides good grip.

Sectioning

  1. Measure sections: 1.5 to 2 fingers wide, evenly across the surface.
    6. Tight separations: use the tail of your comb and cut the remaining sections.
    7. Order: Work from the withers to the ears, finishing with the toupet.

Braiding

  1. Moisturize or pluck: firmer result.
    9. Tight braid: up to 2-3 cm from the end.
    10. (Optional) Elastic band: handy for beginners; you can also do without it.

Sewing and Button Making

11. Threading: use a blunt needle with a large eye.
12. Starting point: Sew through the braid point (catching all strands); leave ±10 cm of thread and repeat 1x.
13. Folding/Wrapping: Fold the braid double up or wrap it into a compact “roll” against the comb.
14. Cross stitch: Stitch left→right through the base, then right→left. Repeat 3 to 4 times; finish with 1 stitch from bottom to top through the middle.
15. Securing: Make two small knots under the braid, pull tight, and cut the thread short for a neat finish.
16. Check: Round, compact, without “gaps” on the sides.

Tail

17. Braids - Tight downward.
18. Forceps Tip - Grip the end of the braid, pull towards the middle to hide the knot.
19. Secure with thread - A few cross stitches + secure as for the mane.

Detach safely after the ride

20. Always cut with care and control! Use a quick unpicking tool: cut only the fear through the knots, remove remains, unroll, comb.
